[FIX] Get Windows 10 icon in Windows 7/8.1


Windows 10 is going to be launched on 29th July,2015, With this Windows next iteration, Microsoft is going to be all services model meaning after Windows 10 there will be no upgrade or next version of windows says windows 11. Microsoft has made the upgrade to Windows 10 free for the user whose system or version of windows installed is not old more than one year and runs Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 OS in their computer.

How to Enable ‘Get Windows 10′

If you search on google “How to get windows 10 icon in taskbar/notification tray/toolbar”. You would get dozens of results “How to fix windows 10 icon not appearing”. In the web there are three methods through which you can get the Windows 10 upgrade icon in the notification area which we are listed below. Out of the three methods, none of them worked for me. I found a new guaranteed method through which you will definitely get the Windows 10 upgrade reserve icon.

What are the pre-requisites for Windows 10 app icon to appear/enable?

  • You need to have to system which is running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
  • You are not eligible for free windows 10 upgrade if you run the below versions of windows OS.
    • Windows 7 RTM
    • Windows 8
    • Windows 8.1
    • RTM Windows RT
    • Windows Phone 8.0
  • You should have latest updates of windows installed in your system from Windows update in Control panel.
  • If you don’t want to install the full windows updates listed in the windows update and only want the Windows 10 icon.
  • Then you need to install the windows 10 app icon update from windows update which says
    • For Windows 7 service pack 1 and above update
      • KB3035583
      • KB2952664
    • For Windows 8.1 update:
      • KB3035583
      • KB2976978

Method : 1 How to get Windows 10 missing icon using .cmd file?

  • Open Notepad
  • Copy the following below codes in it.

  • Save the file as ReserveWindows10.cmd 
  • Run the file with administrative privilege.
  • After that you will see Windows 10 upgrade icon in tray.

If you don’t see the Windows 10 icon in the notification tray move on to the next method.

Method:2 How to show windows 10 upgrade icon on taskbar using control panel?

  • Open Control panel
    • Goto Administrative Tools
      • Task Scheduler
        • Task Scheduler Library
          • Microsoft
          • Windows
          • Setup
          • gwx
  • Select the refreshgwxconfig and run it.
  • You will see the windows 10 icon in the taskbar.

If using the Task schedular method doesn’t seem to work for you either then move to the third method.

Method 3: Get Windows 10 icon using windows batch[.bat] file

This method to get the windows 10 app icon enable is the easiest of all. You need to run the Win10fix_full.bat with administrative privlleges  which you can download in zip format Win10fix_full.zip to run it you have to extract it and run the windows batch file.

You will see the command prompt dialog box like the one above. Select any of the quick-method or long-method to get the windows 10 upgrade icon. You can also check the update status if you have installed  KB3035583 in your computer. If doing all the above three methods doesn’t show up the Get Windows 10 Icon. Like all of you guys I tried the above all three methods but nothing seems to work for me. Then after I discovered a new workaround to Get Windows 10 app Icon in tray bar without running any script or doing next to nothing. You see you have installed the KB3035583 windows update and it is saved in the windows system 32 folder which we can access from going to

C:\Windows\System32\GWX

Run the GWX executable file

Then Run the GWX executable .exe file like you always do to install a new software with Run as admin. After a second or two you will see the Get Windows 10 in the taskbar for sure. From there you can reserve your copy of Windows 10 when it launched on 29th July,2015.

  1. Hi, tried all and the last option GWX.exe and still nothing…GWX starts with a pop up if I want to run it and then nothing happens
